(english version below)
Ciao Fiat. Eh, ciao Fiat pare facile a dirsi dopo 14 anni.
Ogni giorno. Soprattutto quando le cose non andavano bene. Soprattutto in quel caso, se no, come si dice a Roma, so’ boni tutti.

Ciao Fiat. Eh, Ciao Fiat. after 14 years it seems easy to say. Then instead of Ciao, I’ll say Grazie. Grazie, hear how beautiful this word is, we all should say it more often. The Grazie were Venus and Jupiter‘s daughters and the word Grazie, as you can imagine, also contains Beauty. Think about how many things we convey when we say Grazie to someone.
Grazie for all I have learned in these 14 years. I had the opportunity to see a big part of Italy and a small piece of the world. I have learned a lot from colleagues of every degree, level and provenance. I learned from the entrepreneurs I met. I learned a lot from the workers, especially from my fellow workers in Naples. From whom get their diploma studying during the night, from whom is bringing up their children alone, from whom want to marry his or her spouse, from those who can not get married. I learned from the managers who managed me, from the people I managed, from the colleagues I worked with and shared with. I learned from entrepreneurs who were looking for ideas to survive during crisis times.
Change, evolve, learn. It was a wonderful show to see it happening. It was a wonderful show to be able to “listen”. Only with the ear on the ground you can take the right decision and the noise is never only the market, it must also be the one of the people you work with. Grazie to you who trusted me. Grazie to you who let me being wrong, to those who have taught me to turn the information around and not use them as a power weapon. Grazie to whom taught me to be so transparent to seem ingenuous, to whom taught me to share, to talk, to respect and to defend their own people. Grazie to you who taught me to support people because there is nothing wrong in asking for and giving help, accepting dialectic as a value, and not as a rebellion.
Grazie to whom taught me (doing it with me) that being a good manager is also an ethical and social responsibility, a political duty. Through this I learned that another leadership model is possible.
(Grazie also to those who were exactly the opposite. Unluckily, sometimes there they are, like pebbles in the lentils: even if few people, they do great damage. If you survive to them, you can also learn a lot from them).
In my turn, I learned, I hope, to do the same with my “people”. Every day. Especially when things did not go well. Especially in that case. Grazie to all the people I managed. Grazie for having taken freedom and turned it into responsibility. Grazie to those who have been supporting a bit more, to those who asked for help without being afraid to do so (do not ever be afraid to do it). Grazie to those who asked me “let me do” (do not ever be afraid to do it), they deserved it and they challenged the hardest part of the manager: to delegate. It has not always been easy for me, it required trust and deep emotional communication skills.
Grazie to all the people who started writing to me these days to ask me how I am. Grazie to all the friends, lots of friends, who will stay forever, as it is normal when you build bridges. I would not be what I am without these 14 years and without each one of you. These 14 years were the most beautiful of my life, sometimes even the most difficult, of course.
It was an honor to be part of this “story”, to defend the work done with those who did not believe in it, to fight prejudice (eh, yes) and to be together, with the awareness about the things to do and to change direction. In these 14 Years we never gave up, we were never satisfied. I never was. I hope you continue writing this story. In doing so, I also hope that you will find time to raise your head and always see your people and listen to them. I hope you will find time for them, always. Find time to build value. Leave something. Sometimes say no, if you think that the direction taken is not the right one for the company, although it may be the right one for your career (one of the most dangerous and damaging aspects in a company that we should defend with very advanced alarm systems). The British use a beautiful word, “engagement”. It is the factor that makes the difference between being able to “go well” and to be able to excel.
Engagement is an emotional factor. It does not cost anything but is one of the most precious assets in an organization and it is the hardest one to generate. Never give up in engaging your people, your colleagues, your partners. I wish you to reject compromises and shortcuts, to be “consistent” and reliable and above all to leave things better than they were. Here it is what I have learned in these recent years: things should always be better than they were. I think I have always tried to do this.
Ciao Fiat, now it’s really the time to say Ciao.
